Comparing Kratom Extracts vs. Traditional Kratom Powder: Which Is Right for You?

Comparing Kratom Extracts vs. Traditional Kratom Powder: Which Is Right for You?

Shopping for kratom can be a confusing process, especially if you’ve never bought this herbal product before. Buyers find that it’s difficult to differentiate the different forms of kratom.

The most commonly asked comparison is the difference between kratom extracts and traditional kratom powder. Although both are derived from the same plant, they are not the same end product.

Keep reading to learn the differences and find out how to buy both options from an online reputable wholesaler.

What Is Kratom?

Kratom extracts and traditional kratom powders both come from kratom. Kratom refers to a plant in the same family as coffee plants, referred to as Mitragyna speciosa.

Kratom is most popular in Southeast Asia, with the most kratom trees growing in Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia.

Kratom comes in various forms, but extracts and powders are common. Capsules and tablets might be made from powder or extracts.

Extracts come in different forms, including pastes, capsules, and liquids. Any kratom products can be placed into capsules.

Kratom Extracts vs. Traditional Powders

With multiple types of kratom, it can be hard to distinguish them. If you are confused about how they compare to each other, we’ll go over the common differentials.

Extract can take many forms, including extract powders. This is why it can be difficult to differentiate between regular powder and extract powder, but the color of the powder is the easiest way to tell them apart. Specific characteristics separate them, starting with how they are made.

Understanding Kratom Powder

If you are trying to buy Kratom online, you will note that plenty of stores sell it in powder form.

The powder is made from the leaves of the plant after they are dried out. Companies that sell it in powder form dry out Kratom leaves either in direct sunshine or in a controlled processing environment.

Once the leaves are harvested and dried out, manufacturers grind them into various fine types of kratom powder.

Understanding Kratom Extract

You will also note that Kratom is sold in the form of an extract. Kratom extract also starts in raw leaf form. The raw leaf or powdered leaf can be combined with a common solvent known as Ethanol to create a rudimentary extract. This is one of the simplest ways to create an extract or “tincture” from Kratom leaf, but definitely not the only way.

It typically requires alcohol of at least 80-proof or 100-proof to effectively create a Kratom extract solution. Always feel free to ask the manufacturer or vendor that you are purchasing your Kratom extract from what their extraction process, or manufacturing process consists of. If they are unsure, or do not have any COAs for the product, try shopping around in order to buy the best Kratom extract available. A very common approach to extracts on the market today is attempting to shortcut the process by not properly suspending the Mitragynine into the solvent base at all. Instead, they will take 60% or higher extract powder and mix it directly into a flavored liquid. This is when you will see small pieces of the extract powder settle on the bottom of the container. EZ Kratom’s 30ml 100mg sweet tea flavored Kratom extract liquid does not do this. Our liquid is properly suspended in the solvent base and you will never see pieces floating at the bottom.

Similarities and Differences Between Kratom Powder and Kratom Extract

Kratom products are readily available in either form. Understanding the similarities and differences between kratom products will help you as you shop around.

Here are some important points to note:

Extract Is More Concentrated

The biggest difference is that Kratom extract is more concentrated than its powder counterpart. The lowest Kratom extract you will generally find on the market is a 5% extract powder. This means that 5% of the powder consists of Mitragynine. For example, 1000mg (1 gram) of 5% extract powder will contain 50mg of Mitragynine. The other 950 mg is chlorophyll (the part that makes a plant green), fats, lipids, etc. that are pulled during the extraction process. Depending on the solvent that is used during extraction, different parts of the plant are pulled. The lower the percentage of Mitragynine, the darker the powder will be in its final form. The higher the percentage, the lighter the powder will be in its final form. EZ Kratom sells a 5% Mitragynine extract powder through our website and we use this 5% extract powder to blend with our Ultra Enhanced Kratom powder products, which increases the Mitragynine per gram.

Solvent-based extracts allow manufacturers to include more of the active alkaloids in the Kratom product within a smaller solution or container size.

The Powder Doesn’t Have Additives

Another major difference is that Kratom powder is pure and does not contain any additives. While extracts require solvents to transition the leaves or powder into its extracted form, Kratom powder contains all of its original qualities without any materials being added to the mix. If you are looking for a non manufactured Kratom product, then raw powder is the way to go. Similar to Cannabis, some people argue that the full spectrum of alkaloids within raw Kratom powder is responsible for the way it interacts with the brain. Cannabinoids found in the Cannabis plant, when used in conjunction with each other, produce a much different effect on the human brain compared to a simple THC-only based extract.

They Feature Different Colors

You will also notice color differences between Kratom powder and Kratom extract. Left untouched, Kratom leaves are a healthy green and generally contain red, white, or green veins. The plant will more or less retain this color when ground into a powder.

However, Kratom extracts have nothing to do with the color of the plant. A controlled manufacturing of a Kratom product, similar to our 100mg 30ml liquid Kratom extract, has nothing to do with what color the plant was. All that matters is how much Mitragynine in total was extracted from the plant and then making sure the math is done properly during the manufacturing process to keep the product at 100mg per bottle. Whether that’s 50mg, 100mg, 250mg, or whatever the number is, the main focus is on the level of Mitragynine (or 7-Hydroxymitragynine if that is what you are purchasing). As stated above, a 5% Mitragynine Extract powder is not called a “5% Red Maeng Da Extract powder.” It is simply called a 5% Mitragynine Extract powder because once the plant has been extracted, all that matters is the level of Mitragynine in the leftover extracted product. The “color” of the extract powder has nothing to do with the color of the plant that it has been extracted from either. Their darker color, as stated above, is merely due to the solvent used and the refining process once that solvent has extracted whatever it can from the plant. Certain solvents will pull different things from the starting material and the less Mitragynine you have on a per gram basis, the darker the color of the extract will be. The higher the concentration of Mitragynine, the lighter the extract will become.

They Both Contain the Primary Alkaloids

While Kratom extract contains a different ratio of active compounds, the powder and extract will contain the same primary alkaloids. This depends on the solvent being used, as some solvents are better for extracting 7-Hydroxymitragynine (7-OH), while some are better for extracting Mitragynine. It is easier to extract the Mitragynine out of the plant compared to the 7-OH from the plant. In both forms, they are natural compounds that are also found in other plant species in varying amounts.

Some of the alkaloids that you will find both in the powder and extract form of the kratom plant include:

  • Mitragynine – This is the main alkaloid in the Kratom plant, as it makes up nearly 70% of its composition
  • 7-hydroxymitragynine – This alkaloid is another of the most prevalent, though it only makes up about 2% of the plant’s alkaloid composition
  • Paynantheine – This alkaloid makes up about 8% to 9% of the plant’s composition
  • Speciogynine – The Kratom plant features up to 7% of this alkaloid
  • Isomitraphylline – This compound is found in the Kratom plant, though it generally contains less than 1%

When purchasing either Kratom powder or Kratom extract, do your research to find out how much of each active compound is found within the product. Mitragynine is the most consistent among these, so check the content regardless of which form you’re buying kratom.

How Kratom Powder Is Made

Kratom powder is closer to the basic form of the kratom plant. The most basic form refers to the kratom leaves.

Manufacturers make kratom powder by waiting for kratom leaves to mature. If growing a Kratom tree from seed, it takes a minimum of 3 years before a leaf can be harvested with any type of Mitragynine content. Leaves are then picked, cleaned, dried and crushed finely. This results in the fine powder that you can purchase online.

If you buy kratom powder, you are getting a finely crushed-down version of the plant itself. When the plant is processed into powder, there are similar levels of alkaloids compared to the natural plant.

Kratom has almost 25 alkaloids, but the most notable ones are mitragynine and hydroxymitragynine. Most of the alkaloids on kratom leaves are mitragynine, but alkaloid content can differ based on the region.

How Kratom Extract Is Made

Kratom extracts take more time to manufacture than powders. The involved manufacturing process begins with the powder or kratom leaves. Extracts cannot exist without kratom powder or leaves.

Depending on the extraction method, the kratom might be boiled with alcohol. The kratom powder or leaves (starting material) must sit on a low simmer, or low boil, in order for the extract process to take place. Generally, a good starting place is 20 minutes, but it is important that you do not let it sit for too long, as it could end up damaging the alkaloids in the process. Before it cools down and becomes more solidified, it is best to strain the liquid to remove all plant particles and starting material from the liquid. From there, you can let it rest, or continue simmering at a very low temperature to help steam off the solvent (alcohol in this case). The solvent will also naturally evaporate if you let it cool down. Some people even let it sit directly in the sun if you live in a hot environment like Florida. This will help evaporate the alcohol from the mixture without destroying the alkaloids in the process. The final result is a much more concentrated liquid, but this is a very rudimentary process and will not taste or look good at all.

More liquid boils off as the extraction process continues. The remaining liquid becomes more concentrated.

Kratom extract has a high concentration because of this process. All or most of the alkaloids in the plant are extracted. Alkaloids make extracts more concentrated.

Kratom extract is the highest concentrated form of Kratom made from the extraction process.

This is how kratom liquid extract is created. However, other forms of kratom, such as pastes, are manufactured through baking or freezing the plant.

Cost Differences

Because making kratom extracts is a more time-consuming process, extracts are typically more expensive than powders. The cost for a specific extract depends on the manufacturing method that was used to make it.

In addition to the cost, there are several signs that kratom is a powder or concentrated form.

Check the labels of the products you plan to purchase. The label or description should say extract or use the word “concentrated.”

The color of the Kratom powder, whether raw powder, or extracted powder, can help determine if it’s an extract or not. Traditional, raw Kratom powder is generally going to be a nice green color, or sometimes burned red/brown if you are buying a low quality powder. However, an extract powder can be anywhere from completely black, to almost completely white multiple shades in between. As stated previously, the level of “purity” or in this case “percentage” of alkaloids within the extract will affect the color of the end extracted product. As seen with our 5% Mitragynine Extract powder sold on the website, it is a dark black color that sparkles in the light. However, a 60% or higher extract powder will be closer to a light green, or almost a white shade of color.

What Are the Laws Regarding Kratom Extract and Powder?

Kratom is federally legal in the entire USA. However, as of April 2025, only five (5) states have bans affecting Kratom. There are many other localities that have Kratom bans or regulations and you can find these by scrolling to the bottom of the EZ Kratom website. Every page on our website lists the states and zip codes where Kratom is currently banned.

In most U.S. states, you can legally buy kratom from gas stations, smoke shops, and online retailers.

The legal age to buy kratom varies from state to state. In some states you must be 18 or older, in others, you must be 21; and in some states, there are no age restrictions on buying kratom at all.

Even in non-age restricted states, stores may decide their own policy on selling kratom to people who are under 18.

You must be of the legal age to buy kratom in your state or buy kratom online.

Buy Kratom Extract Online

If you want to buy kratom extract or powder online, it’s important to buy from reputable vendors. Buying kratom comes with a risk because products from the plant aren’t well-regulated.

Only buy premium kratom products manufactured by GMP-compliant vendors. The American Kratom Association’s GMP program ensures vendors properly label products. You should also make sure the products you buy are lab-tested.

If you don’t understand how to tell the difference between kratom extract and traditional powder by comparison and labels, ask the vendor. An honest vendor will make things easier for kratom buyers.

Manufacturing Practices

We cannot stress enough the importance of buying kratom from a trusted vendor with good manufacturing practices.

If you buy from just anywhere online, there is a risk of product adulteration.

Like most plants, there is also a growing risk. Kratom may suck cations out of the soil. This means heavy metals could make it into the plant form.

Read up on companies that are wholesalers and have good reputations from people who buy kratom extracts online. This is the best way to find tested kratom products free from metals and adulteration.
